New blood cancer drug shows stronger early response in CML study

Researchers from Adelaide University and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute have found that the targeted drug asciminib suppresses the cancer-driving protein in chronic myeloid leukaemia more effectively than imatinib and nilotinib. Within one week, asciminib showed substantially stronger suppression than these existing treatments. The researchers say the findings could help doctors assess treatment response earlier. The study was published in the journal Leukemia. The researchers note that individual responses may vary and further clinical assessment remains important.

Four-year-old Maxi Catania is in remission after a nine-month battle with an aggressive form of leukaemia. Her mother, Jana Catania, said the treatment was gruelling. On Tuesday, the WA government and Channel 7 Telethon Trust announced more than $4 million for seven child health research projects. One project, led by Dr Sebastien Malinge at the University of Western Australia, is developing immunotherapy aimed at making treatment less toxic. Ms Catania credited Telethon and Perth's PCH for her daughter's care.

‘Trip of a lifetime’: How brave Oli Roberts’ snowy dream finally came true after a seven-year cancer battle

Eleven-year-old Oli Roberts has seen snow for the first time, a wish granted by Make-A-Wish Australia and Telethon. Oli was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at two-and-a-half years old and spent three and a half years on chemotherapy. His family travelled from Busselton to Mount Hotham in Victoria, where the children played in the snow and Oli tried snowboarding. Oli reached five years since finishing treatment on June 13 this year and is officially cured, his mother says.
