Chery plans Australian R&D centre for growing brand lineup

Chery plans to set up an Australian research and development centre to adapt vehicles from its expanding brand range to local driving habits, roads and weather. Chery International president Zhang Guibing said the company wants more local input, and that any brand launching in Australia could be covered. The company has not yet disclosed a location, opening date or investment amount. Chery is already working with Melbourne-based engineering firm Premcar on testing the Stockman ute, which is due in Australia from February 2027. Several other brands are preparing Australian launches during 2027.

No sound reason to change Cowes Harmony Bells, they say

Cowes' Harmony Bells on Phillip Island remain silent, according to Bass Coast Shire Council, which says there are no plans to alter the installation or move the bells. Resident Darren Callesen questioned the decision at a recent council meeting, asking why the village's voice had been silenced and suggesting mallets be fitted or the bells relocated. Council CEO Greg Box responded on the council's behalf after consulting the artist, Dr Anton Hassell. The bells were stolen in 2021 but recovered by police before being shipped overseas.

Crugnale says woodlands overlay now rests with council

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale supports an interim Environmental Significance Overlay for the Western Port Woodlands, but says the Bass Coast Shire Council is responsible for submitting the required material to the Department of Transport and Planning. The council wants the overlay to protect the woodlands, which stretch between Lang Lang and Bass, until 2028. The state government is seeking further information from the council to assess the application.
