Gun buyback leaves North Coast waiting

Gun owners on the North Coast will have to wait months to surrender firearms under the NSW National Gun Buyback. Grafton is the only North Coast station opening from November 2. Lismore, Ballina and Tweed Heads stations start on February 8, 2027. The limit of 10 guns per licence holder is still a draft proposal, with exemptions under consideration. Walk-ins are not accepted, and surrenders require a booking through the Gun Safe portal.

Grieving family will 'never understand' decisions made by killer

Family members of Samuel Liszczak have addressed Tyrone Russell in the Sydney Supreme Court as sentencing submissions began. Russell was found guilty of manslaughter in March, and Cory James Glass was found guilty of being an accessory after the manslaughter. Madison Wiggins asked Russell why he did not call Triple Zero and instead pushed Mr Liszczak's body from a moving vehicle. His mother, Dee Lianos, said losing her son had changed how she sees the world. Justice Richard Weinstein described the actions of Russell and Glass as unsophisticated. The sentencing hearing will continue on December 17.

Councillor who told woman it was a 'pity' she wasn't bashed won't resign

A Mid North Coast councillor will not resign after an independent investigation found he posted a violent comment to a woman raising domestic violence concerns. Kempsey Shire councillor Noel Selby said his Facebook page had been hacked, though he said he would consider attending a men's behavioural-change program. Council unanimously censured him and asked him to resign. The matter will be referred to the Office of Local Government, which could lead to his disqualification. Mayor Kinne Ring said the investigation had cost council more than $40,000.

Councillor told woman it was a 'pity' she wasn't bashed, investigator finds

An independent investigation has found that Kempsey councillor Noel Selby posted a comment on social media saying it was a pity a woman had not been bashed. Selby has said his account was hacked and that he did not post the comment. The investigator, Jennifer Perry, nonetheless formed the view that he did. The investigation found the comment breached the council's code of conduct and recommended a formal censure. The full report will be considered at a council meeting on October 20, and calls for his resignation have followed.

Kempsey councillor’s “bashed” comment was real, investigator finds

An investigation has confirmed that Kempsey Shire councillor Noel Selby posted a Facebook comment suggesting a woman should have been assaulted, contrary to his earlier claim of unauthorised account access. The comment, which has since been removed, followed a discussion about domestic violence. Centium's report found the remark breached council conduct codes and recommended censure. Anti-violence advocate Sherele Moody has urged Selby to resign, citing the normalisation of gendered violence. The council will consider the recommendation at its next meeting, with censure being the most severe potential outcome.
