Should we replace controversial colonial statues? Hobart just did

Hobart has replaced a toppled statue of colonial figure William Crowther with a native garden surrounded by a bronze ring. The ring carries three written contributions, covering Crowther, Aboriginal figure William Lanne and statues more broadly. Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said the project followed more than five years of community consultation. Architect Mat Hinds described the design as a more thoughtful way of sharing local history than statues. Some councillors and protesters opposed the replacement, and the original statue is in storage at the City of Hobart.

Tasmanian parents of trans children urge MPs to vote for conversion ban

Parents of transgender and gender diverse children across Tasmania have written to MPs urging them to vote for the Greens' proposed ban on conversion practices. The bill is due to be debated from Wednesday. In a joint letter, twenty-eight parents say transgender Tasmanians continue to face harmful conversion practices. Tasmanian doctors and healthcare workers have also written to Parliament backing the bill. Parents have raised concern that some MPs may move to remove gender identity from the bill, which they say would leave children unprotected.

WeBuild is fighting criminal charges interstate. The stadium was costed at $1.13 billion last year, and Premier Jeremy Rockliff has committed to releasing the final tender cost before signing.
