Probus marks two milestones

The Combined Probus Club of Hamlyn Heights is celebrating 25 years of friendship and community activity. The club began its birthday with a presentation and lunch earlier this month and will hold a special luncheon on Friday 30 October. Member Patricia Boom said members are excited about the 25- and 50-year anniversaries. She said the club offers newly retired people in Geelong a way to build friendships and feel part of the community. Activities include monthly morning teas, lunches, dine-outs, nursery visits, trips and book swaps.

Retro Hamlyn Heights time capsule home frozen in the ’60s

A three-bedroom weatherboard house at 14 Kalimna St, Hamlyn Heights, has been preserved with original 1960s features. Six wallpaper patterns, a curved blue kitchen bench and an old-school potato vent remain intact. The home is listed for sale through White House, Geelong, with a price range of $650,000 to $700,000. Listing agent Aisha Coe said the vendor grew up in the house, which was owned by her parents. The property sits on a 656 square metre block.

Growing clubs need a bigger playing field

The City of Greater Geelong is asking the Victorian government to partner with it on a redevelopment of Myers Reserve in Bell Post Hill. The council's master plan, completed in 2022, proposes upgrades for bowls, netball, football, cricket and soccer facilities. The council has already committed $1 million towards the plan. Deputy mayor Eddy Kontelj has urged candidates for the state seat of Lara to commit funding ahead of the Victorian election.

PropTrack data reveals Geelong property values falling as rate rises hit investor demand

House values in several Geelong suburbs have dropped over the past three months, according to new PropTrack figures. Corio, Norlane, St Albans Park and Whittington had grown 10 to 14 per cent over the past year, but their median house values fell in the latest quarter. The decline followed a fourth Reserve Bank interest rate rise this year. Maxwell Collins director Nick Lord said investors and self-managed super funds had been pulling back as borrowing became harder. Buyers agent John O’Brien said investors were now focused on rental yields of about 4 per cent.
