A 13-year-old boy accused of a drive-by shooting in Perth will stay in custody for the next six weeks. He chose not to apply for bail, and will remain at Banksia Hill Detention Centre. Police allege he fired more than 20 shots from a semi-automatic rifle into a Gosnells home on October 17, when seven people were inside. No one was seriously injured. The boy faces eight charges, including unlawful use of a firearm. Police have not yet found the weapon, and the boy will return to court in December.
The Western Australian government will introduce legislation to protect LGBTQIA+ students and teachers from discrimination, harassment and vilification in religious schools. Premier Roger Cook and Attorney-General Tony Buti announced the Equal Opportunity Bill 2026, which they describe as the most significant reform of the state's anti-discrimination framework in almost half a century. Under the bill, religious schools could no longer sack teachers or expel students because of their sexuality. Religious institutions would still be allowed to discriminate based on religion. Advocacy groups welcomed the announcement.
Western Australian police are investigating whether a 13-year-old boy from Victoria, who allegedly fired more than 20 rounds from a semi-automatic rifle into a Gosnells home early on Saturday, was recruited by an underworld group that supplied the weapon. Seven people were inside, including children, and one man suffered minor injuries from broken glass. Detectives reportedly believe pick-up and drop-off instructions for the firearm were sent electronically, though the weapon has not been recovered. The family had reportedly moved to Western Australia only weeks earlier.
