The Victorian regional towns where house prices are soaring in a downturn

House prices in Victoria's regions rose 6.7 per cent over the past year, even as the Melbourne market slowed after interest rate rises. Glenelg recorded the biggest jump, with prices climbing more than a quarter in 12 months. Agents in Portland and Ararat say interstate investors are driving demand, while limited listings push prices up. Mansfield was one of the few areas where the median house price fell, dropping by more than $75,000 in the September quarter. Experts say regional areas are attracting buyers through relative affordability and more job options.

Beachside traders raise concerns after recent fights

Traders at Glenelg, a popular Adelaide beach area, have raised concerns that public brawls could keep families and tourists away. Police charged a 15-year-old boy with disorderly behaviour over an alleged fight at Glenelg Jetty on Sunday, and he is due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in December. The incident followed separate fights at Glenelg and Henley Beach in September, one of which led to a 14-year-old being reported for aggravated assault. Police have brought forward Operation Jericho to increase patrols along popular Adelaide beaches. Premier Peter Malinauskas warned young people they would face consequences.

Grandfather's HQ Kingswood keeps family memories alive

Trent Truran and his family take his grandfather's red 1973 Holden HQ Kingswood to the Bay to Birdwood historical car rally each year. The car was bought in 1975 after two years as a company car and was driven across the Nullarbor and across South Australia. Its engine is the only non-original part, replaced after the first one kept overheating. Mr Truran says the car is a head-turner that draws memories from passers-by. This year the family is also bringing a 1975 Toyota LandCruiser FJ55, the same model his father drove.
