‘Chilling’: man’s death sparks gambling reform calls

A Victorian coroner has said the death of Kyle Hudson should be a clear signal that national gambling reform is needed. Mr Hudson, who had lost close to $50,000, died by suicide at his Werribee home in July 2021. The coroner found his online gambling was the direct cause of his death and criticised betting companies for relying on customers' own answers during interventions. He made nine recommendations, including a national online gambling regulator. Sportsbet and bet365 said they were committed to stronger consumer protections.

'Reverse ATMs': pokies panned for harm as reforms urged

Gambling reform advocates are increasing pressure on the NSW government to curb pokies, which the state has in greater numbers than any place except Nevada. A Wesley Mission-commissioned survey found public trust in the state government to stand up to the gambling industry fell from 35 per cent in May 2025 to 16 per cent in September 2026. Independent MP Alex Greenwich said the parliament had failed to take meaningful action this term. The Put Pokies in their Place campaign wants machines shut between midnight and 10am.
