Foster carers needed across Geelong

Geelong residents are being encouraged to open their homes to children and young people in foster care. Community services organisation Life Without Barriers is seeking more carers across the region through its Sharing is Caring campaign, which runs until 4 November. Carer practice manager Rebecca Granata said about 10,300 children and young people across Victoria need care. She said local carers would help children stay connected to their family, school and community. The organisation welcomes people from many backgrounds, offering emergency, respite, short-term and long-term care options.

Regulator pauses major Mallee centre from taking on new foster children

Mallee Family Care can no longer take on new referrals to its NSW out-of-home care program. The NSW Office of the Children's Guardian imposed the condition following routine monitoring. The agency can continue running its existing foster care and home-based care programs. It must submit a review of its policies and procedures by November 27. The regulator first varied the agency's permissions in September 2025 and asked for an improvement plan.

The challenges facing foster and kinship care

Advocates urge all political parties to address these issues in their platforms for the forthcoming state election. The Wire reports that without intervention, the system may struggle to meet growing needs.
