Flood water rescue, Leyburn

Six people were rescued after rising floodwater trapped them at a public campground in Leyburn on Sunday morning. Emergency services received reports around 7.45am that the campers were trapped on Tullamaville Road. Queensland Fire and Rescue Swiftwater crews responded, and all six were rescued around 11.15am. No physical injuries were reported. Police urged people to avoid unnecessary risks around floodwater and never drive through it, as depth and current are hard to judge.

It took less than six minutes for this 4WD to sink out of sight

A grey four-wheel drive sank in floodwater covering a road in Morayfield, north of Brisbane, within about six minutes. ABC reporter Will Murray and bystander Daniel Hainey pulled the driver free after the vehicle was submerged. Flood researcher Amy Peden said people cannot judge the depth or speed of floodwater, and warned that rescues can cost would-be rescuers their lives. Queensland Fire and Rescue instructor Matt Kelemen advised occupants to lower windows or break side windows, as opening doors against floodwater is difficult.
