Copeton Dam turns 50: the water behind Inverell’s economy

Copeton Dam has marked 50 years since its official opening. Inverell Mayor Kate Dight says the dam supports the town's domestic water supply, major industries and flood protection. She said the local economy, including the abattoir, Boss Engineering and a pet food factory, depends on the water security it provides. The dam is 54 per cent full, and the council holds a high security licence with WaterNSW, which owns the dam. Council did not plan any celebrations because it does not own the dam.

Arden vision promises new cultural and parkland neighbourhood – but big questions remain

A $7 billion vision for Arden Central in Melbourne has been unveiled, with more than 5400 homes, eight new parks and a 5000-capacity live music venue. A Hamton and Hostplus joint venture has been appointed to deliver the 12-hectare precinct near Arden Station. Plans also include a new public secondary school and sporting facilities. The City of Melbourne has opposed the proposed planning controls, citing flood risks and infrastructure funding shortfalls. Initial civil works are expected in 2027, with the first residential building due by 2032.

‘My house will be underwater’ – Residents rally against CSIRO flood basins

Residents in Kyogle have formed a group called Dam Free Kyogle to oppose proposed flood detention basins recommended in a CSIRO report. The basins, which many locals call dams, are proposed for Eden Creek, Fawcetts Creek and Collins Valley, with a possible fourth at Gradys Creek. Lesley Garred, a Lynchs Creek resident, says her property would be underwater if the plan goes ahead. The CSIRO report says the basins would use sluice gates to hold back floodwater and release it gradually. Information sessions are being held at the KMI Hall in Kyogle on November 1 and 2.
