What the changing face of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs could mean for Victoria’s state election

Melbourne's eastern suburbs are shaping up as key battlegrounds in Victoria's state election. The Liberal party must win back several seats, including Box Hill, Glen Waverley, Ashwood, Ringwood and Bayswater, to govern in its own right. Labor holds all of them by narrow margins. Local voters raise concerns about small business costs, public safety and state debt. Some say they may back Labor despite criticism of its economic management.

Thunderstorms, heavy rain and flash flooding predicted for much of Australia

Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast to sweep across most Australian states this weekend, adding to flooding in Queensland. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. Senior meteorologist David Crock said storms are expected across central and eastern Queensland on Saturday. Earlier this week, flash flooding in south-east Queensland prompted hundreds of SES callouts and the closure of several schools. Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast hinterlands recorded seven-day rainfall totals of 300 to 400 millimetres.

Police have arrested 29 people after uncovering two illegal casinos in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, as part of an investigation into alleged drug manufacturing. Police allege a 40-year-old South Melbourne woman was charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine. Detective Inspector Carlie Kohler said the arrests would help dismantle drug syndicates and get drugs and weapons off the streets.

Whale carcass closes Maroubra and Coogee beaches in Sydney – video

A baby whale carcass has washed ashore at Lurline Bay in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, and Randwick City Council has shut nearby beaches as a precaution. The council is consulting the NSW Department of Primary Industries and the Gamay Rangers on a culturally and environmentally sensitive approach. The carcass is not being removed for now. Its rocky, cliff-lined location makes access difficult, and the council is considering closing the surrounding area and rock shelf walkway. Mayor Clare Willington said the whale is an important totem animal to the local Bidjigal people.

‘Almost looks fake’: two Sydney beaches closed after whale carcass washes up

Two busy Sydney beaches, Coogee and Maroubra, have been closed until further notice after a decomposing whale carcass washed up at nearby Lurline Bay. Randwick Council said the closure protects swimmers and surfers, as whale carcasses can attract sharks. Council has no plans to remove the animal. Staff are working with the Gamay Rangers on a culturally sensitive approach, and the carcass is believed to be a juvenile humpback. Residents are asked to avoid the area and follow directions from lifeguards and authorities.

‘She coulda left’: The powerful artwork exposing the excuses used to minimise domestic violence

Artists Philippa Lysaght and Omi McCurdie have created Sweethearts, an artwork on display at Marks Park between Bondi and Tamarama beaches. It features 56 concrete sweetheart lolly sculptures, each carrying one of 20 phrases often used to excuse or shift blame for domestic violence. The hearts represent women killed by a current or former partner this year. The pair say they want people to speak up when they hear such excuses. Profits from sales of the artworks will be donated to Women's Community Shelters.
