Father of former NRL star says son is ‘very ill’ as Nathan Merritt faces criminal charges

Former NRL star Nathan Merritt faces drug and gun charges, and his father says he is seriously ill. Police raided Merritt's Marrickville home on Thursday, hours after a ram raid on a Fendi store in the Sydney CBD. Merritt has not been charged over the ram raid. Police allege he possessed cocaine and a pistol, and he spent a night in custody. Merritt, 43, has said he has months to live with liver and oesophageal cancer. He is on bail and is due back in court in early November.

Helen Haines loses other leg but in stable condition, husband says — as it happened

Independent MP Helen Haines has had her right leg amputated, her husband Phil Haines says, after her left leg was removed earlier in the week. He said she is alive and stable, and that her recovery will be long. Brendan Nugent, 43, briefly faced Wangaratta Magistrates' Court charged over the alleged attack outside her electorate office, and did not apply for bail. Police say they had no forewarning of the threat and have yet to determine a motive. Leaders across politics and beyond have called for respect and calm in public debate.

State Flying Squad reunite puppy with family during latest Logan deployment

More than 90 charges were laid during an eight-day State Flying Squad deployment in Logan. Investigators charged eight adults with 73 offences and six young people with 21 offences. A German Shepherd puppy was returned to its family after police allege a 33-year-old Edens Landing man obtained it through a fraudulent transaction. He faces fraud, drug supply and theft charges and will appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on 5 November. A 26-year-old Buccan man, wanted on a return to prison warrant, was arrested and remanded in custody.
