Country residents paying three times to keep local doctors

A Western Australian country town is giving 16 per cent of its annual rates income to keep a local doctor. The Shire of Narembeen pays the local medical practice $370,000 a year and also provides a building, a car and a house. Shire President Holly Cusack says the arrangement is financially unsustainable but that losing the GP would mean a 120-kilometre round trip to the nearest doctor. In Kalbarri, a community group crowdfunded more than $70,000 to set up a not-for-profit, bulk-billing clinic after the town's only GP closed in June.

Voters speak from Melbourne suburbs where roads are 'choked' every day

Residents of Kalkallo, in Melbourne's outer north, are calling for new roads as their population has grown from 105 in 2016 to more than 11,000 in 2026. The only exit from the suburb is onto Donnybrook Road, and residents describe daily traffic jams. The Victorian government says construction of a $153 million interchange on the Hume Freeway will begin by the end of 2026, funded by developer Stockland. The Coalition has promised to duplicate Donnybrook Road. A car bridge is not planned until at least 2037.

Community urged to back Donnybrook Road upgrade

The City of Whittlesea is asking residents to back a campaign for a full upgrade of Donnybrook Road. Council says the road is operating well beyond its capacity, causing congestion and delays for commuters. Rapid population growth is adding pressure on the route, which affects access to work, school, public transport and essential services. Council is urging the Victorian Government to commit to the upgrades. Residents can add their voice through the Engage Whittlesea page, where they can contact the Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety.
