Pervasive stigma still driving drug deaths, advocates say

Advocates say stigma still stops drug users from getting health care, even though the ACT decriminalised small amounts of illicit drugs in 2023. Speaking at a Canberra memorial for overdose victims, Hayley Shaw described nearly dying from an overdose at 14 and her friend Daniel's death at 29, after he struggled to get adequate pain relief during cancer treatment. GP Ben Harkness said some users avoid mainstream services for fear of judgement.

Prominent LGBTQIA+ rights activist, author, archivist and historian Robert French AM has died at age 79. He passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, and the community has been sharing tributes. He played a key role in the movement to decriminalise male homosexuality in New South Wales and was a long-serving figure in the Pride History Walks. At his request, there will be no funeral, and a celebration of his life will be held later. In 2024 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the community and to history preservation.

Public intoxication reforms slash deaths in custody

An evaluation of Victoria's 2023 decriminalisation of public intoxication has found no related deaths in custody and no people held solely for being drunk in public. The Monash University report, released on Friday, praised police for maintaining a health-led approach. Arrests for secondary offences during intoxication-related events occurred in five per cent of matters, but Aboriginal people remained twice as likely to be arrested as the general population. Report lead author Kyllie Cripps said First Nations people, young people, migrants and people with disabilities have historically been hardest hit by such laws.
