Rapist ‘monster’ who held woman captive for two days ‘deserves no mercy’, court told

Sisituutuumata Fulivai, 47, was found guilty of 20 charges at the ACT Supreme Court, including sexual intercourse without consent and unlawful confinement. His victim told the court he had held her captive for two days at his Lyneham home in June 2024. She escaped naked and was found by police. Prosecutors said he posed a significant risk to women and called for a significant prison term. His barrister argued rehabilitation should still be considered. Justice Belinda Baker reserved her decision and will sentence Fulivai, who remains in custody, at a later date.

Anger after Indigenous teen shackled to hospital bed

Western Australian officials have defended the use of restraints after a photo showed a 16-year-old Indigenous girl shackled to a hospital bed following her arrest by police. Her family, who cannot be named for legal reasons, shared the image showing her ankles locked to the bed frame. Her grandmother said the girl had scratches on her breasts and stomach from police handling and called the practice appalling. The justice department said restraints are used under standard custodial procedures. Police said a review found officers acted within policy, and the girl has been charged with three offences.

Indigenous girl, 16, shackled to hospital bed after being allegedly dragged through her home by police in Perth

The Western Australian justice department has defended using restraints on a 16-year-old Indigenous girl shackled to a Perth hospital bed after she was taken into custody. A photo shared by the family shows her ankles chained to the bed. Her grandmother alleges police used excessive force during the arrest over child neglect allegations, and says the teenager had scratches on her body. WA police say a review found officers acted within policy. Police have charged the girl with three offences, and advocates are calling for federal action on shackling.

Major development after Hayden Panettiere’s death as ex-fiancé steps in

A Los Angeles County court has granted Wladimir Klitschko temporary guardianship of the estate of his daughter Kaya, the 11-year-old child of late TV star Hayden Panettiere. Klitschko, her former fiance, filed an urgent petition last week, saying law enforcement agents and a non-family member were taking items of her property. His lawyer, Diane Park, told the judge that someone had tried to sell Panettiere's jewellery at a pawn shop. Judge Stephanie Santoro approved the move until a long-term administrator is appointed.
