Community independents on hunt for candidates as elections near

Canberra's community independents movement is searching for candidates for the federal and ACT elections due in 2028. Voices for Belconnen and Gungahlin is seeking six more panel members to join three existing ones on its Candidate Endorsement Committee. The group plans to announce a Fenner candidate in May or June 2027, and candidates for Ginninderra and Yerrabi in October 2027. Community feedback so far calls for honest, practical candidates who are free of vested interests. Leigh Cox said the selection process would be transparent and could include a citizens' assembly.

Bendigo gets new 'Voice' ahead of Victorian election

Community leaders in Bendigo have set up Voices for Bendigo, an independent group that says it has no plans to run a candidate in the Victorian state election. Spokesperson Claire Flanagan-Smith said the group wants more residents of Bendigo East and Bendigo West to take part in politics, describing it as a community movement for people who feel disconnected. Sue Fricke, a representative of the group, said it would continue after the election but is not a political campaign and does not endorse any person or party.
