Eco-escape or pure adventure? The Cocos (Keeling) Islands have it all

A new boutique retreat called The Cephalopod has opened on West Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The one-bedroom cabin was hand-built by local couple Emma Washer and Pete Wicks using upcycled materials, including timber salvaged from original island bungalows. It sits about 25 metres from a sand beach and is the only accommodation located out of town. Visitors can take part in cultural tours on Home Island, go fishing in the lagoon, and try kitesurfing at Kite Beach. The islands are a half-day flight from Perth and form part of a large marine park.

Forgotten tradition of shadow puppetry returns to Cocos Islands

A master puppeteer from Java has brought wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry, back to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The art form had not been performed there for almost 80 years, after the island's last puppeteer, Nek Ichang, died in 1949. Sumardi's performances on Home Island brought back memories for older residents and drew young islanders into the tradition. Around 70 of the original puppets remain in the Home Island Museum. UNESCO has recognised the practice on its intangible cultural heritage list.

Pre-COP push leaves Australia's remotest territory feeling forgotten

Residents of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands say they feel left behind in global climate efforts. Their proposal to be represented at the COP31 forum in Türkiye was approved by the United Nations but not funded by the Australian government. Home Island resident Luluk Sloan said the islands lost a chance to share their story and learn from Pacific communities facing similar coastal erosion and flooding. West Island resident Rose Cummins said the community wants the same opportunity. The Department of Climate Change, Energy and Water said engagement with Pacific partners complements its support for Australian communities.
