Giorgos Lygouris died on Friday at the age of 104. His daughter, Mary Tsimikli-Economopoulou, announced the news on social media, describing a quiet farewell. Born in Kalamata in 1922, he worked as a policeman in Greece before migrating to Germany and later to Australia in 1967. He and his wife, Athanasia, who died seven and a half years ago, had five children, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Emilia Keramidas turned 100 on 14 October. At 14, she fled her mountain village in Greece during the German invasion of 1941. She was later shot at by German soldiers while searching for food, but reached safety and was reunited with her family. In 1957, aged 30, she sailed to Australia with her sister Dora and settled in Melbourne, where she worked as a tailor. She now credits her long life to the Mediterranean diet. A letter from King Charles and Queen Camilla has marked her birthday.
Maureen Shelly has celebrated her 100th birthday in Tea Gardens with fellow Legacy members. She was born in Charlestown in 1926 and grew up on land her family was granted near Warners Bay Road. Her husband Jimmy served in the RAAF during World War II, and the couple later moved to Tea Gardens in 2008. After Jimmy died in 2009, Maureen joined the local Legacy group. The local Legacy members held a lunch for her at The Garden Eatery, with birthday cake for dessert. Maureen says she feels more like 50 than 100.
