Tesla's Q3 profit drops 44 per cent from year earlier

Tesla's net income for the latest quarter fell 44 per cent from a year earlier, to $US787 million. The electric vehicle maker's revenue was roughly flat at $US28 billion, slightly below analyst forecasts. Excluding certain items, earnings per share beat expectations. Free cash flow of $US1.5 billion surprised analysts, who had expected cash burn. Elon Musk said special committees at Tesla and SpaceX were discussing a possible combination, though many hurdles remain. Capital spending doubled to $US4.7 billion.

Here’s an idea from left field: make the ACT a low-tax honeypot

University of Canberra Vice-Chancellor Bill Shorten has suggested the ACT review its taxes and charges against other states and consider cutting them to attract investment. Speaking at a Canberra Business Chamber event, he compared the idea to Delaware, a low-tax US state, and said it was only an idea for now. Shorten also proposed that the ACT slow its capital spending and that the University of Canberra and the Canberra Institute of Technology merge. He criticised federal rules on international students, calling them economic self-harm.
