MP attack spurs 'unprecedented' election security talks

Victoria's premier, Ben Carroll, says extra security will be in place for the November 28 state election after an alleged targeted attack on federal MP Helen Haines. Police allege Brendan Nugent, 43, drove a four-wheel-drive into Dr Haines outside her Wangaratta electorate office on Monday. She remains in critical condition after both legs were amputated. Nugent has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious harm and intentionally causing serious harm, and faced court for the first time on Wednesday. Police have not ruled out further charges, including attempted murder.

Council's call for greater candidate safeguards wins support

A motion from the City of Moreton Bay calling on the State Government to better protect the privacy of local government candidates has been adopted at the LGAQ Annual Conference. The motion will be included in the LGAQ's advocacy agenda. It seeks a registration system for candidates and the removal of existing contact information held by the Electoral Commission of Queensland. Mayor Peter Flannery said the State's recent change allowing post box addresses in election material was not strong enough. Two other safety motions were also adopted at the conference.
