Grenades caused deadly fire at Canadian military base

A fast-moving grass fire sparked by live grenade training killed at least four soldiers at a military base in western Canada, a senior defence official says. High winds drove the blaze across the Wainwright base, overwhelming dozens of soldiers. Officials say 27 people remain in hospital, several in critical condition. The soldiers were preparing to deploy to Latvia. Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered flags lowered to half-staff in honour of the victims.

Encryption Is Getting Squeezed From All Sides

Canada's proposed C-22 bill could require tech companies to build law enforcement access into their products. Psiphon VPN says it will leave the country if the bill passes, and encrypted messaging app Signal has said it would exit the Canadian market. Apple and Meta have criticised the bill, while DuckDuckGo and NordVPN say they would consider pulling their services. Critics say any access to encrypted data would amount to a backdoor that could be abused. Researchers also warn the bill could require companies to retain user metadata that privacy services avoid collecting.

US resident conspired with Canadian school shooter, officials say

US officials allege a Washington state resident conspired with an 18-year-old to commit a school shooting in Canada that killed nine people. James Cody Bryant, 30, allegedly offered to live-stream the attack and sent money for the shooter's shoes. Bryant was detained on a charge of conspiracy to murder people in a foreign country, which carries a penalty of up to life in prison. The shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, killed their mother, stepbrother, a teacher, and five students before dying by suicide.
