Did someone say free beer? Award-winning brews set to flow at Beer Day Out

The Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets will hold the third annual Beer Day Out on Sunday 8 November. The free event, run with Plonk, will let visitors sample beers and talk with brewers from nearly two dozen breweries across the region and the nation. Live music will feature, and the relaxed setting suits both beer enthusiasts and newcomers. Canberra brewers Cypher Brewing, Capital Brewing and Bentspoke Brewing will attend, alongside breweries from interstate and New Zealand. Entry is free but ticketed, with registration through Humantix.

More than 80 breweries lost as decline in drinking sees businesses close

More than 80 breweries have shut down since June 2023, according to the Independent Brewers Association. Alcohol consumption in Australia fell by about 10 per cent in the three years to 2024. Analysts link the decline to younger drinkers, tighter household budgets and the rise of non-alcoholic alternatives. Non-alcoholic beer sales are projected to almost double by 2028. Hunter Valley winery owner Nathan Heuston says his weekly income has fallen sharply, while Australian Grape and Wine says the industry faces its most difficult period in generations.
