Leaked Mass Effect: Universe trailer gives a taste of what we're all missing

Electronic Arts has decided not to proceed with a Mass Effect game, a decision that led to the closure of its developer BioWare. Writers Catherynne M. Valente and Derek Kunsken say they worked on the project for years. An EA memo described only a small team as working on early development. IGN, citing sources inside Prime Video, reports that a Mass Effect streaming series first announced in 2024 is still in active development. An online petition urging EA to continue the game has nearly 17,500 signatures.

BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights, is closing. The studio announced the news on social media on Wednesday afternoon, saying early development on the next Mass Effect project is also ending. The announcement came minutes after a Bloomberg report on 400 job cuts across parent company Electronic Arts, including 50 at BioWare. BioWare was founded in 1995 and joined Electronic Arts through a 2007 purchase. Electronic Arts was taken private last year in a $55 billion deal.
