Accused paedophile barrister sent 'disgusting' messages to charity worker

An ABC investigation has revealed the close ties between accused barrister Mark Dennis and children's charity Sunrise Cambodia, where he was chairman from 2018 to 2020. Dennis was charged with possessing child abuse material in January but was found dead at his home before entering a plea. Former staff allege inappropriate behaviour by Dennis, which was not reported to Sunrise. Sunrise says police told it no current or former child has been identified as a victim. Former staff and documents also raise concerns about the charity's child protection record.

Bruce Lehrmann's rape trial postponed to allow time to find barrister

The rape trial of former Liberal Party staffer Bruce Lehrmann has been postponed. He had been due to face trial on November 2 on two counts of rape alleged to have occurred in Toowoomba in October 2021. He has indicated he will plead not guilty. The Brisbane District Court heard his solicitor, Zali Burrows, had struggled to secure a barrister. Judge David Kent said the adjournment should not be open-ended, and that the defendant must act promptly. Prosecutor Caroline Marco opposed the delay. No trial date has yet been set.

Mark Dennis went from top silk and charity 'big boss' to accused predator

An ABC investigation has detailed allegations that Mark Dennis, a Sydney criminal defence barrister, gained power within the children's charity Sunrise Cambodia and had access to vulnerable children. Dennis was arrested after child abuse material was allegedly found on his devices when he returned from Cambodia in January. He was released on bail and was later found dead at his home in February. Former staff say they saw troubling behaviour but felt unable to report it because Dennis was a major sponsor.
