The cause of the collapse is unknown.
A suspicious fire at an abandoned childcare centre sent thick smoke across Altona North on Tuesday afternoon. Fire crews were called to Millers Road, next to the Millers Junction shopping centre, just before 5pm on 13 October. The single storey building was already engulfed when firefighters arrived, and smoke prompted community advice. Firefighters in breathing apparatus worked to stop the blaze spreading to neighbouring properties. The building suffered significant damage, including a partial roof collapse, but no one was inside and no injuries were reported. The fire was under control shortly after 5.20pm, and police are investigating the cause.
An Altona North resident has suggested demolishing Borrack Square because of repeated illegal rubbish dumping. Geoff Mitchelmore, a former Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year, said a recent pile of rubbish stayed on the McArthurs Road side for almost a month. He also pointed to the loss of the centre's Woolworths supermarket in 2024 and three shooting incidents this year. Mr Mitchelmore said shopkeepers' dumping and council inaction were the main concerns. Hobsons Bay council said the rubbish had been collected, acknowledged residents' frustration, and is reviewing options to prevent repeat dumping.
