More than 80 breweries lost as decline in drinking sees businesses close

More than 80 breweries have shut down since June 2023, according to the Independent Brewers Association. Alcohol consumption in Australia fell by about 10 per cent in the three years to 2024. Analysts link the decline to younger drinkers, tighter household budgets and the rise of non-alcoholic alternatives. Non-alcoholic beer sales are projected to almost double by 2028. Hunter Valley winery owner Nathan Heuston says his weekly income has fallen sharply, while Australian Grape and Wine says the industry faces its most difficult period in generations.

Nightlife venues embrace 'experience economy' as alcohol consumption falls

Nightlife venues in central Queensland are moving away from relying on alcohol sales. Young people are drinking less, and spending less at the bar, according to Queensland's night-life economy commissioner, John Collins. Rising insurance, supply and wage costs are also squeezing venues. Pub owner Stephen Roberts says his venue now hosts a weekly run club and attracts a younger crowd. University of Queensland consumer behaviour expert Felix Septianto says people buy experiences, not just drinks, and that memorable events can bring customers back.
