Stocks, bonds cautious before big week for risk

Global shares edged up on Monday as oil prices eased from six-month highs, ahead of a week of central bank meetings and corporate earnings. Oil fell about two per cent to $US114.60 after reports that Qatari mediators were in Tehran in an effort to ease tensions. The Houthi group in Yemen said it had attacked Saudi Arabia's East-West crude oil pumping stations and Riyadh airport, though Riyadh did not immediately confirm this. Markets expect the US Federal Reserve to hold rates steady this month but price in a likely rate rise in December.

People power in suburbs exposes fragility of AI boom

NEXTDC shares fell 42 per cent in a single day after the company said delays in getting power to its inner-west Melbourne data centre expansion would cut its future earnings by a third. The delays followed residents in Yarraville blocking power company Jemena's crews from working in Sanderson Street, forcing them to abandon the holes they had dug. Separately, the planned listing of AI data centre company Firmus, valued at about $44 billion, fell apart after large investors refused to pay $11 a share.

Asian markets rebound after CoreWeave stock shock

Asian shares rebounded after heavy tech selling in the previous session, when investors dumped tech stocks over questions about cloud company CoreWeave's debt. Japan's Nikkei rose 1.8 per cent and South Korea's KOSPI gained 2.8 per cent. Indonesia's equity benchmark slumped 11 per cent after index provider MSCI said the country's market no longer deserved emerging market status. Analysts expect continued volatility as tech earnings are released and investors watch central bank signals. Gold eased, and Brent crude traded near $US105 a barrel.
