Remand centre built for adults to remain open to children over capacity concerns

A Queensland detention services inspector says a remand centre built for adults should keep holding children, because youth detention centres may lack capacity under proposed breach bail and jail laws. Anthony Reilly, who is also the state ombudsman, said the Wacol Youth Remand Centre is not suitable for children but is better than police watch houses. The average number of children there each day rose from 32 to 54 by August 2026. Premier David Crisafulli said his government had increased capacity by 20 per cent and would keep investing in facilities and early intervention.

Influencer Sam Wood to lodge Supreme Court bail application on DV charges

Online fitness trainer Sam Wood will take his bail fight to the Supreme Court of Queensland after a magistrate refused him bail. Police allege he assaulted his wife Snezana at a Noosa property on Saturday night. He faces charges of assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation in a domestic setting. Police prosecutors told the Maroochydore Magistrates Court he posed an unacceptable risk of committing further offences, citing an alleged earlier incident in Victoria, which he denies. Acting Magistrate Janelle Boegheim remanded him in custody until November 23.

How to sell under the hammer as Qld’s auction clearance rate tanks

Only one in five Brisbane properties sold under the hammer over the weekend, according to Realestate.com.au data. The city's preliminary clearance rate was 22 per cent, down from 30 per cent a week earlier. Regional Queensland fell to 18.9 per cent. Realestate.com.au economist Luc Redman said clearance rates are likely to stay low until sellers lower price expectations or demand returns. A riverfront Newstead penthouse sold for $5.825m, the biggest Brisbane auction sale, while a Daisy Hill property sold for $2.3m.

Brisbane agent Heath Williams says buyers are competing hard for homes with character that cannot be replicated, even as the wider market shifts. A former hospital outbuilding at 24 Brisbane St, Annerley, sold for a suburb-record $4.45 million after being converted by architect Ric DeLuca. A riverfront Queenslander at 66 Yeronga St, Yeronga, sold for $6.25 million, and Triangle House at 1 Sherman St, The Gap, sold for $1.415 million. More than 60 groups inspected a Paddington home at 61 Beck St at its first open home, where offers close on November 11.

‘Catastrophic’ fire fears fail to switch off Brisbane apartment block’s EV charger

A Queensland adjudicator has rejected an urgent bid to switch off an electric vehicle charger at The Pavilion Apartments in Bulimba. Resident Kin Chen argued that the basement car park lacked fire safety systems to deal with a possible electric vehicle fire. The adjudicator found there was no immediate urgency, noting the charger has operated since about 2020. The body corporate committee had granted retrospective approval last month, with conditions including annual servicing. The broader challenge to that approval has yet to be decided, and the charger remains in use for now.

First-time farmer solves mulberry packing problem with dental drill

Retired dentist Peter Lynch has designed a $4 plastic basket that lets pickers pack mulberries directly into punnets. His Sunshine Coast hinterland farm, Kureelpa Mulberry Company, says the change has cut fruit damage by 80 per cent and reduced labour costs. The farm's four-week harvest depends on daily pickers, and the couple is concerned that cuts to working holiday visa numbers could make hiring difficult. Two French working holiday makers on the farm said a second year in Australia is uncertain.

‘They were mistreated’: Block fans rally around unlikely contestants amid auction day drama

Fans of The Block have rallied around Queensland contestants Chantel and Wyatt, claiming they were mistreated by production and unfairly judged. Viewers on Reddit argue the couple was targeted, given a bad edit, and unfairly portrayed as the show's villains. Others believe the judges were harsh, as the couple did not win a single room reveal despite completing their renovations on time. Meanwhile, the cast is reportedly divided, with separate after-parties planned for the upcoming auction.

Property Council Queensland executive director Jess Caire said infrastructure such as roads and water must keep pace with demand. The council is calling for a $500 million industrial infrastructure fund and a coordinated state strategy to unlock more employment land. Average sale prices for smaller industrial sites rose about 44 per cent over the year to June 2026.

Cassowary Coast flood monitoring project recognised for excellence in

Cassowary Coast Regional Council has won the Local Government Mutual Services Risk Excellence Award for its Flash Flood Sensor Network. The radar sensors monitor water levels at known flood-prone locations across the region. Readings feed into the Cassowary Coast Disaster Dashboard, where residents, emergency services and Council can view local conditions. The network has already helped police and State Emergency Service personnel monitor conditions around Mission Beach. Council is running a three-year trial to verify the sensor readings and assess the system's effectiveness.
