Brisbane’s ‘X-factor homes break suburb price records as buyers hunt rare character designs

Brisbane agent Heath Williams says buyers are competing hard for homes with character that cannot be replicated, even as the wider market shifts. A former hospital outbuilding at 24 Brisbane St, Annerley, sold for a suburb-record $4.45 million after being converted by architect Ric DeLuca. A riverfront Queenslander at 66 Yeronga St, Yeronga, sold for $6.25 million, and Triangle House at 1 Sherman St, The Gap, sold for $1.415 million. More than 60 groups inspected a Paddington home at 61 Beck St at its first open home, where offers close on November 11.

The Cables That Keep the World Connected

Most intercontinental internet traffic travels through fibre-optic cables laid on the ocean floor, not through satellites. Cables are most often damaged by fishing activity and ship anchors, and also by earthquakes and underwater landslides. Repairs require specialist vessels that locate the fault, cut out the damaged section, splice in new cable and return it to the seabed. Major technology companies, including Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon, have invested in new cable systems. Australia relies on these links for overseas markets and cloud services.

How Old Is That Apple? Why Australian Apples Can Stay Crisp for Months

Apples can be stored for months before reaching shops, and growers use controlled-atmosphere rooms to slow ripening. In these rooms, operators lower oxygen and manage carbon dioxide while keeping temperatures cool. The fruit stays alive but changes more slowly. Storage conditions, variety and harvest timing all affect texture and eating quality. Shoppers cannot tell harvest dates from an apple's appearance, and an origin label does not reveal when it was picked.

‘Catastrophic’ fire fears fail to switch off Brisbane apartment block’s EV charger

A Queensland adjudicator has rejected an urgent bid to switch off an electric vehicle charger at The Pavilion Apartments in Bulimba. Resident Kin Chen argued that the basement car park lacked fire safety systems to deal with a possible electric vehicle fire. The adjudicator found there was no immediate urgency, noting the charger has operated since about 2020. The body corporate committee had granted retrospective approval last month, with conditions including annual servicing. The broader challenge to that approval has yet to be decided, and the charger remains in use for now.

Outback mining jobs are on the rise with no workers to fill them

Mining companies in Queensland's North West Minerals Province are struggling to find workers as drilling ramps up and new jobs open. AIC Mines chairman Aaron Colleran said hiring has been difficult everywhere, including at its Eloise copper mine near Cloncurry. The Australian Resources and Energy Employer Association estimates the industry will need 24,000 new workers across the country by 2027. Queensland Resources Council figures point to competing skill needs and fewer young people entering trades and mining careers. Industry leaders say apprenticeships must grow to ease the shortage.

Children are encouraged to collect rubbish instead of lollies, and free face painting will be offered. Marine animals can mistake rubbish for food or become tangled in it.

Ex-RAAF pilot Robert Crawford’s double life laid bare in court over wife’s alleged lawnmower murder at Upper Lockyer

Former RAAF pilot Robert John Crawford, 49, has pleaded not guilty to murdering his wife, Frances Elizabeth Crawford, at Upper Lockyer, west of Toowoomba, in July 2024. Prosecutor Chris Cook told the Brisbane Supreme Court jury that the scene, with her body beside a ride-on mower, was staged to hide her strangulation. Cook alleges Crawford was motivated by a looming divorce settlement and had affairs. Crawford's barrister, Saul Holt KC, argued the prosecution's evidence was incomplete. The jury will visit the site on Wednesday, and up to 47 witnesses are expected over three weeks.
