Gun buyback leaves North Coast waiting

Gun owners on the North Coast will have to wait months to surrender firearms under the NSW National Gun Buyback. Grafton is the only North Coast station opening from November 2. Lismore, Ballina and Tweed Heads stations start on February 8, 2027. The limit of 10 guns per licence holder is still a draft proposal, with exemptions under consideration. Walk-ins are not accepted, and surrenders require a booking through the Gun Safe portal.

Thieves leave observatory toilet wide open

Thieves have stolen the heavy grey door from a toilet at the Mallanganee Observatory, taking the hinges as well. Resident Neville O’Malley, who cleans the toilets every second day, said the theft happened between October 21 and October 23. Police have been notified. Kyogle Council said the cost of replacing the door will depend on whether insurance covers it. The council said these thefts harm ratepayers, who must fund replacements or pay higher insurance premiums. Residents have asked for a live webcam or CCTV to monitor the site.

Junee Hotel on the market after Reynoldses put heart and soul into historic pub

Brendon and Emma Reynolds have put the historic Junee Hotel on the market so they can move closer to family. The couple took over the lease in 2023 and later bought the property, restoring its rooms, bathrooms and bar. They have added community events, including a singles night that Emma says led to five relationships. Emma criticised government taxes on regional pubs and staffing rules that limit backpacker workers. The couple plan to live in the hotel while a sale progresses, which they say can take six to 12 months.
