Riverina Rewind: Why did a Wagga constable beat up a travelling preacher?

In October 1928, a Wagga Wagga constable arrested visiting Baptist revivalist Thomas William Brogan at a busy intersection, triggering a national scandal. Witnesses said the constable pushed Brogan to the ground and dragged him to the lockup as a crowd booed. Brogan was charged with offensive behaviour. The police magistrate dismissed the charge, saying the preacher had shown extraordinarily bad judgment in preaching at a busy intersection. Local sympathisers later raised money for Brogan.

Copeton Dam turns 50: the water behind Inverell’s economy

Copeton Dam has marked 50 years since its official opening. Inverell Mayor Kate Dight says the dam supports the town's domestic water supply, major industries and flood protection. She said the local economy, including the abattoir, Boss Engineering and a pet food factory, depends on the water security it provides. The dam is 54 per cent full, and the council holds a high security licence with WaterNSW, which owns the dam. Council did not plan any celebrations because it does not own the dam.

Griffith Police Station to accept guns under controversial buyback scheme

Griffith Police Station will begin accepting eligible firearms from 2 November under the NSW Government's gun buyback scheme. The scheme follows the Bondi Beach terror attack in December 2025, which killed 15 people. Owners must book an appointment online through Gun Safe, and compensation ranges from $450 for an air rifle to $1000 for a centrefire rifle or revolver. Local firearms dealers, including Anthony Mancini of Riverina Firearms Centre, say the reforms have hurt their businesses and that the payments are too low. Further police stations will join the scheme from 1 December and 18 January 2027.

Drivers travelling between Armidale and the coast on Waterfall Way should allow extra time from Monday, 26 October, to Sunday, 8 November. Transport for NSW says a string of maintenance jobs and projects may cause cumulative delays, with some sections of up to 10 minutes. Vehicles wider than 3 metres face restrictions on parts of the route, and a permit is needed. Motorists can follow signs and directions from traffic controllers, or use alternative routes including the Oxley Highway, Gwydir Highway or New England Highway.
