PM admits $6m Marrickville Golf Club grant is not for sewage fixes

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has admitted that a $6 million grant promised to Marrickville Golf Club does not fund sewerage repairs, contrary to what he told Parliament. Infrastructure Department officials confirmed at a Senate estimates hearing that the project includes no sewerage works. Most of the money will redevelop the clubhouse, while $1 million goes to stormwater harvesting and $500,000 to landscaping. Albanese said the NSW government is funding the sewerage aspects. He also has an undisclosed honorary membership at the club, which the ABC reported.

Griffith Police Station to accept guns under controversial buyback scheme

Griffith Police Station will begin accepting eligible firearms from 2 November under the NSW Government's gun buyback scheme. The scheme follows the Bondi Beach terror attack in December 2025, which killed 15 people. Owners must book an appointment online through Gun Safe, and compensation ranges from $450 for an air rifle to $1000 for a centrefire rifle or revolver. Local firearms dealers, including Anthony Mancini of Riverina Firearms Centre, say the reforms have hurt their businesses and that the payments are too low. Further police stations will join the scheme from 1 December and 18 January 2027.

Police minister defends NSW gun buyback amid questions over illegal firearms and gang violence

New South Wales Police Minister Yasmin Catley has defended the state's gun buyback scheme after 150 applications were lodged in its first hours. Bookings opened on Monday, and the government plans to remove up to 274,000 firearms from the community. Catley said fewer guns in circulation would make the community safer, pointing to firearms stolen across the state. Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane has criticised the scheme, arguing it focuses too heavily on licensed owners rather than illegal guns used by organised criminals.
